Heritage and Conservation

The role of our Working Group is to preserve and celebrate our City’s Heritage Buildings and work with the Council and other organisations to deliver projects that enhance and protect our city’s built and cultural heritage.

Projects include:

  • Serving on the Canterbury Tales of England Board and working closely with Canterbury City Council to deliver the Levelling Up Fund Projects.
  • Arranging a tour of the city for the design team for Mountfield Park to help them to understand the character of the city as they develop a design code for the new housing development
  • Engaged with English Heritage in the preparation of a new World Heritage Management Plan for the Canterbury World Heritage Site
  • Founding member of Alliance of Historic Cities and Towns (Historic England) and engaged in the research project “Towards a Better Balance between Heritage and Growth in Historic Towns and Cathedral Cities”’ which was funded by Historic England.
  • The Annual Civic Champion Awards for individuals who have made a major contribution to the quality of life in the city. 
  • Organising the annual Canterbury Heritage Open Days in conjunction with with the Canterbury Commemoration Society.
  • Organising a working group to manage the Canterbury Blue Plaques Award. A scheme of fourteen blue plaques celebrating the lives of fourteen famous people with connections to the city.
