Architecture, Planning and Streetscapes

The role of our Working Group is to provide advice and comments on any matters affecting the architecture, planning and design of the city.

Projects include:

  • Ongoing scrutiny and comments on development proposals and planning applications to Canterbury City Council which are insensitive to the quality and vulnerability of our unique build heritage
  • Working closely with the Canterbury Heritage and Design Forum
  • Organising the biennial Canterbury Society Design Awards (with awards under various categories including new buildings, urban spaces, retrofits, housing)
  • Working with Canterbury City Council on the production of its revised Shopfront Guidelines
  • Submitted consultation responses to the Council’s LUF (Levelling Up Fund) especially with regard to the proposed restoration of the castle.
  • Campaigning for the abolition of plastic windows in conservation areas
  • Re-furbishing of St Dunstan’s pedestrians’ underpass (completed November 2020)
  • Photographic competitions.
