Sarah Baker’s Kent Theatres 1737-1816
Following the AGM of the St Peter’s Residents Association (SPRA), they are hosting a talk by Dr Jean Baker on ‘Sarah Baker’, one of the most successful Georgian theatre impresarios who established the first proper theatre in Canterbury.
In 1789 Sarah Baker opened her ‘Great Grand Theatre’ in Orange Street (now the BoConcept Furniture shop), the facade of which can still be seen. Making the unlikely transition from strolling player to wealthy entrepreneur, she opened three more purpose-built theatres in the county at Rochester (1791), Maidstone (1798) and Tunbridge Wells (1802).
This will be an extremely interesting talk by an excellent speaker!
